Albert Einstein was among the first to envision a unified theory that could account for the behavior of all matter and energy in the cosmos, but a definitive solution has eluded physicists to this day. Quantum mechanics is part deterministic, part probabilistic. According to the 'standard' quantum theory, states evolve with certainty between measurements, but 'collapse' randomly when we measure them. But what is measurement? And why does it (appear to) enjoy a privileged position in the theory? The measurement problem has been one of the hottest topics in physics ever since quantum theory was proposed and, despite much progress, remains so today. For those of you in New York City you can check out Matt live at PBS Nerd Night at the NYC YouTube Space on Thursday night September 22nd. Hope to see you there. to.pbs.org/nerdnight Albert Einstein strongly disagreed with Niels Bohr when it came to Bohr’s interpretation of quantum mechanics. Quantum entanglement settled the argument once and for all. Bohr believed that in observing such particles we collapsed a wave function of probabilities. He asserted that it is only when these wave functions collapse that one of many probabilities is chosen and the particles take on distinct values. Quantum entanglement, John Stewart Bell and Alain Aspect eventually proved that Bohr was correct. Professor Simon Saunders, Professor of Philosophy of Physics and Fellow of Linacre College, Oxford vs. Professor James Binney FRS, Professor of Physics, Director of the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics, and Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. This Occam meeting for the first time offered the different perspectives of not one but two expert speakers: • Prof. Saunders is a leading proponent of the 'many worlds' interpretation of quantum mechanics, which argues that the Universe we see is emergent, and constantly subject to 'splitting' - including during measurements. • Prof. Binney advocates an alternative programme, suggesting that we should gain insight into measurement by better understanding the dynamics of the system's interactions with the measuring apparatus. The debate took place on Monday 13th May 2013 in the T.S. Eliot Theatre at Merton College, Oxford. It was moderated by Dr Alan Barr and Dr Ralf Bader, and introduced by Dr Alexander Schekochihin - all three are Fellows of Merton College.

Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2009/10/07/Richard_Dawkins_The_Greatest_Show_on_Earth Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins explains that he no longer debates creationists because his presence only validates their status. He compares the situation to a reproductive scientist agreeing to debate an advocate of the "stork theory." ----- Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion created a storm of controversy over the question of God's existence. Now, in The Greatest Show on Earth, Dawkins presents a stunning counterattack against advocates of "Intelligent Design" that explains the evidence for evolution while keeping an eye trained on the absurdities of the creationist argument. More than an argument of his own, it's a thrilling tour into our distant past and into the interstices of life on earth. Taking us through the case for evolution step-by-step, Dawkins looks at DNA, selective breeding, anatomical similarities, molecular family trees, geography, time, fossils, vestiges and imperfections, human evolution, and the formula for a strong scientific theory. Dawkins' trademark wit and ferocity is joined by an infectious passion for the beauty and strangeness of the natural world, proving along the way that the mechanisms of the natural world are more miraculous -- a "greater show" -- than any creation story generated by any religion on earth. - Berkeley Arts and Letters Richard Dawkins is a world-renowned evolutionary biologist and author. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and, until recently, held the Charles Simonyi Chair of Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. His first book, The Selfish Gene, was an instant international bestseller, and has become an established classic work of modern evolutionary biology. He is also the author of The Blind Watchmaker, River Out of Eden, Climbing Mount Improbable, Unweaving the Rainbow, A Devil's Chaplain, The Ancestor's Tale The God Delusion, and most recently, The Greatsest Show on Earth. Professor Dawkins's awards have included the Silver Medal of the Zoological Society of London (1989), the Royal Society's Michael Faraday Award (1990), the Nakayama Prize for Achievement in Human Science (1990), The International Cosmos Prize (1997) and the Kistler Prize (2001). He has Honorary Doctorates in both literature and science, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society.

What's the correct theory of quantum gravity: string theory or loop quantum gravity? Hear world experts Raphael Bousso and Carlo Rovelli forced to attack their own sides during the 2014 Foundational Questions Institute conference "The Physics of Information" in Puerto Rico. See Raphael Bousso and Carlo Rovelli's conference talks here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq4_dyuy0cs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Qy5Vdzps3g FQXi.org FQXi's 4th International Conference, "The Physics of Information" January 5-10, 2014 Vieques Island, Puerto Rico The past century in physics seems to lead in a surprising direction: away from physics as a description of objects and their interactions, and towards physics as a description of the evolution of information. Is this the correct way to think about physics and the physical world? What is information? What does the term "information" even mean? What role does information play in quantum gravity, cosmology, thermodynamics, life and consciousness, and what links does it provide between these areas? FQXi's international, interdisciplinary conference on the Physics of Information brings together leading researchers to discuss the significance, meaning, and uses of information in physics.
